As of July 2023, there were 68 egg producers in China with inventories of one million or more laying hens.

The combined laying population of these large producers totalled more than 200 million birds, accounting for about 20% of the country's layer inventory. Among them, five companies have layer inventories of more than 10 million birds; six companies have inventories of 5-10 million birds.

Statistics show that the 11 'super-large' producers have a combined existing (and still developing) capacity of 44.5 million birds in the northeast provinces of Liaoning and Jilin, and the northern provinces of Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. In the northwest provinces of Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu and Xinjiang, they have built modern farms with the capacity to rear 11.6 million laying hens. In the traditional layer farming regions in central and east China (Henan, east Hubei, Shandong and Jiangsu), the producers have a combined capacity to rear 21 million layers.

Traditional consumption regions have become production grounds, as the super-large producers expanded their operations to the eastern, southern and southwestern regions. In Shanghai, Zhejiang and Anhui, they have a combined breeding capacity of nearly 10 million layers.

Looking at individual companies, the production capacity of CP Group and Beijing Deqingyuan has exceeded 20 million each.

CP Group's farms operate in six regions; its farm in Yunnan, with a capacity of three million laying hens, has reached optimum production towards the end of 2023. Deqingyuan built 30 modern farms in 14 provinces. It recently signed a contract with Zhejiang to invest ¥250 million (US$35 million) to construct a 1.2-million layer industrial farm with the capacity to produce 280 million eggs annually.

Sundaily Farm built 17 layer breeding farms in Sichuan, Hebei, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guizhou and Guangdong among other places, with a breeding scale of more than 13 million laying hens. Jinlong Group currently has seven layer farms with an inventory of 12 million birds, all in Shanxi Province.

With its farms in Jilin province, Houde Group has eight million commercial layers. Each of its farms rears 1-2 million birds.

Sichuan Houquan has six ecological breeding farms in Sichuan and Guizhou, with a combined capacity of more than seven million laying hens.

Fujian Yujiangnan is the biggest layer breeding company in Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. It also has two farms in Shandong with a total of 2.5 million laying hens and 600,000 chicks. The company has eight laying hen farms altogether, with a total population of more than seven million laying hens.
