UK swine association calls for fair supply chain and disease prevention

The UK National Pig Association (NPA) has unveiled its general election manifesto, outlining key priorities including supply chain fairness and measures to combat African swine fever (ASF), Agriland reported.

The manifesto highlights three main objectives for the swine sector: ensuring a supply chain that benefits all stakeholders, investing in Britain's biosecurity, and safeguarding animal health and welfare.

NPA emphasised the need for Defra's review of contractual practices in the UK swine sector to result in concrete actions and a mandatory code that provides better protection for primary producers. The association advocates for a more equitable distribution of risk throughout the supply chain, covering all stakeholders including retailers.

Rob Mutimer, chairman of NPA, said it is important to receive government support in ensuring the recovery and growth of the UK swine sector, especially after significant financial losses in recent years.

The NPA warns of the threat to the UK's biosecurity posed by inadequate resources for border checks, particularly concerning goods moving from the EU. They call for enhanced border controls, an urgent ban on non-commercial pork imports, and stricter penalties for illegal meat importation.

Furthermore, the association urges a review of the Animal and Plant Health Agency's (APHA) resources and expertise to ensure effective response to disease outbreaks.

Highlighting the UK's leadership in animal welfare, the manifesto stresses the importance of evidence-based animal welfare policies and maintaining standards in future trade deals. It insists that any future trade agreements should not allow pork produced under conditions illegal in the UK.
