Malaysia to compensate swine farmers affected by African swine fever

Chan Foon Hin, Malaysia's Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister, said the government will finalise a compensation plan for swine farmers affected by the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in the country, The Star reported.
He said that the Agriculture Ministry and the Finance Ministry held numerous conversations about the issue of compensation, with an official announcement to be made soon.
Chan was visiting swine farms in Kampung Selamat and Perkampungan Valdor in the state of Penang, which was also attended by the state Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chan said that every swine farm that had tested positive for ASF was required to follow the established policy, which called for the culling of all swine and to resume operations only after 80 days.
He said that the Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) must adhere to the policy. He also expressed his hope that all parties, particularly swine farmers, will do the same for the sake of the country's biosecurity and consumer welfare.
