More cases of bird flu detected in US states of Indiana and New York
Bird flu has been detected in a fourth commercial poultry flock in southern Indiana state, as well as a backyard flock in Suffolk County, New York, Yahoo! News and the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported.
The case in Indiana was confirmed by the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and is being verified by the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.
15,200 birds at the Indiana farm have been culled to prevent the spread of the disease. A 10km control area has been established around the affected farm, with the 13 commercial poultry farms in the area now under quarantine and will be tested regularly.
A separate case of highly pathogenic bird flu was detected in a backyard flock in Suffolk County, New York. Samples were tested at Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center and confirmed at the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.
The affected premises has been quarantined, and the birds will be culled to prevent the spread of the disease.
The USDA is working with its partners to actively look for the disease in commercial poultry operations, live bird markets and in migratory wild bird populations.
