Price summary

Domestic demand for vitamin C was slack after the Chinese New Year holidays. As livestock producers suffered severe losses while broiler and hog prices plummeted during January, feed millers, who saw feed production shrank by 7% in the same month, limited the purchases of feed ingredients over the past two weeks.

Nonetheless, producers lifted vitamin C prices as supply tightened amid reduced output while export demand remained buoyant.

As of February 18, offer prices for pharmaceutical-grade vitamin C increased to RMB28/kg while quotes by small- and medium-scale producers were slightly lower. Prices of feed- and food-grade vitamin C were higher in the range of RMB26-27/kg.

Ex-factory quotes for coated ascorbic acid moved higher to the range of RMB30-31/kg.

Prices quotes for L-ascorbate-2-phosphate products rose to RMB17.30-18/kg, while transacted prices stayed in the range of RMB16.80-17.30/kg. Some big volume deals were concluded at lower prices.

Export

Ex-factory price quotes for the export markets surged to US$4/kg or higher.
In December 2013, China exported 10,973 tonnes of vitamin C, rising by 26.4% compared with November,

Market forecast

Slow feed consumption will decimate the sales of vitamin C in the local market. However, strong export demand will uphold prices amid tight availability.
