Henan province to set up largest hog base in China
China's Henan Province will build the country's largest hog base in order to supply live hogs to Hong Kong.
The northern China province is expected to supply 400,000 live hogs to Hong Kong consumers in 2011, accounting for 25 percent of the total live hog sales in Hong Kong, according to local government sources.
As a result, the province plans to build the hog base to achieve the target. It will be a joint venture between Hong Kong-based Ng Fung Hong Limited and a local firm. The base has an initial investment of RMB250 million and it will produce one million hogs in five years.
Henan province supplied 203,000 live hogs worth US$40.73 million to Hong Kong in 2,220 batches in 2008. The province currently tops live hog supplies in terms of volume.
Hogs supplied from Henan province to Hong Kong had no occurrence of epidemic for the past 10 years.
