Australian Cattle Declared TB Free

Australian cattle have been declared free from tuberculosis in 2003 for the first time following a grueling series of seventy-six thousand tests conducted on livestock.

The Northern Territory's chief vet, Kevin de Witte, says while the latest result is pleasing, but the danger is not over yet.

"We've been lucky to detect one or two herds per year now for about the last five years," he said.

"I think we need to go a number of years yet with no further case detection to be confident the organism does not survive in our bovine population in this country."
