Russia to be self-sufficient in poultry within three years

Russia should be able to meet its own poultry requirements within three years, according to Interfax, quoting First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov on Saturday (Feb 14).

Russia consumes about 3 million tonnes of poultry meat a year and imports around 1.3 million tonnes. The government has over the years invested heavily in the poultry industry to boost domestic production.

Aside from the possibility of being self-sufficient in poultry meat within three years, Russia could become self-sufficient in pork within four years as well, said Zubkov.

Zubkov said pork production grew 8 percent in 2008 while poultry production rose 18 percent.
