Ecuador's wheat imports to hit 460,000 tonnes in 2006

According to USDA's Feb 1 report on Ecuador's grain and feed, Ecuador's wheat production has continued to decline in 2005. Production in 2005 has been estimated at 6,000 tonnes, with 2006 forecast at 3,000 tonnes.

For 2006, wheat imports are expected to reach 460,000 tonnes, increasing slightly over the previous year. The increase will be due to higher demand from the feed industry and a decline in local production.

USDA said Ecuador's total wheat imports reached 456,000 tonnes, with the US accounting for 30 percent of the market share or 139,000 tonnes. Canada remains the main supplier with 287,000 tonnes in 2005.

Ecuador's corn production is predicted to reach 365,000 tonnes from 118,000 hectares of land. Its total annual corn consumption is forecast to increase to 760,000 tonnes as there is a rapid growth of the feed meal compound industry. The greater production of poultry, pork and shrimp will also add to the increase in consumption.

USDA forecast corn imports in 2006 to be about 430,000 tonnes. The US is expected to remain the main supplier of corn to Ecuador in 2006.
