Skretting Chile first salmon feed mill in the world to obtain ASC Feed certification
Skretting Chile became the first salmon feed mill to be certified under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Standard for aquaculture, which takes into consideration production-related, environmental and social factors, Skretting announced this month.
Audited by certifying company Control Union, the certification also requires feed mills to source from socially responsible suppliers, guaranteeing the transparency of processes run within the feed manufacturing supply chain and visualising through public documents all the progress that a company is making towards sustainability in aquaculture.
Therese Log Bergjord, Skretting's chief executive officer, said: "We are extremely proud to be the first salmon feed company in the world to achieve ASC Feed Standard certification. This is a highly demanding standard that moves in the right direction towards ensuring a positive impact across our supply chain, but we know that the journey doesn't end here. We're already implementing the learnings from Chile to accelerate the certification process across the rest of our operations and, with that, ensure that our customers can keep relying on Skretting to maintain their own certifications for fish and shrimp."
ASC CEO Chris Ninnes, said: "As one of the world's most prominent feed producers, we are delighted that Skretting has earned ASC Feed Certification for two mills in Chile, the first salmon feed mills to do so. With this achievement, Skretting is taking the lead in driving feed production towards environmental and social responsibility. This is not only a milestone for ASC and Skretting but pivotal for the whole industry to strengthen the credibility of fed seafood farming now and into the future. We look forward to collaborating further with Skretting to scale up and ensure availability of ASC-compliant feed to ASC-certified farms around the globe."
ASC's Feed Standard requires that feed mills meet strict environmental and social requirements, source ingredients from socially responsible suppliers, and use environmentally responsible raw materials.
The Feed Standard was launched on June 15, 2021, and became effective on January 14, 2023.
