UK pork exports up in December 2021, total annual pork exports down

The UK's Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) said pork exports from the country was up 1.5% in December 2021 at 16,900 tonnes compared to November 2021. But this total was 24% lower compared to December 2020, which is mirrored in the country's annual export total with 192,700 tonnes of UK pork exported in 2021, compared to 258,400 tonnes exported in all of 2020, AHDB reported.

AHDB cites China as a key reason for the decline in exports, as China has been importing less pork as it seeks to rebuild its swine herd. UK pork exports to China in December 2021 was 6,600 tonnes, under half the 11,400 tonnes exported to China in December 2020.

UK's pork exports to the EU was down 40% year-on-year, as Europe has plenty of pork supplies because it also exported less pork to China.

Pork imports into the UK declined at 27,500 tonnes imported in December 2021, 13% lower compared to November the same year and 20% down compared to December 2020. The UK imported a total of 320,1000 tonnes of pork in 2021, 13% lower compared to 2020.
