EU milk powder, cheese exports increase in 2017
The EU's exports of skimmed milk powder (SMP), whole milk powder (WMP) and cheese all increased in 2017 by 36%, 3% and 4%, respectively, according to data released by the European Commission.
Butter exports, however, decreased by 15% as shipments to second-biggest buyer Saudi Arabia dropped by 47%.
According to the EC, there was a significant increase of EU cheese exports to Chile in 2017. Top exporters of EU cheese were the US, Japan and Switzerland.
The EU was the key exporter of cheese and SMP in 2017.
Top exporters of EU SMP in 2017 were Algeria, China and Indonesia, to which shipments increased 46%, 39% and 24%, respectively.
For EU WMP, Algeria was also the biggest importer, to which shipments increased 97% over 2016. It was followed by Oman (-9%) and Nigeria (+43%).
The US was EU's biggest buyer of butter, increasing 39% in 2017 compared with 2016, followed by Saudi Arabia (-4%) and China (+9%). Rick Alberto (rickalberto@efeedlink.com)
