Under one in three control visits to pig herds in Denmark leads to sanction

A new animal welfare report from Denmark's Veterinary and Food Administration —  with figures from 2021 —  has been published, showing that just under one in three control visits to pig herds triggered a sanction (31.4%).

This is a slight improvement from 33% in 2020. In the coming months, Danish Food Minister Jacob Jensen will meet with several stakeholders and experts to delve into the reasons behind unmet standards and ways to improve animal welfare.

In Denmark, there are general problems in relation to high numbers of docked pigs and piglet mortality. Piglet mortality, including stillborn piglets, is at 23.4%. This corresponds to approximately 10.7 million piglet deaths per year.
