Malaysia's Kuala Balah set to become major poultry producer

Located in Kelantan, Kuala Balah is set to become the East Coast's biggest chicken and egg producer, in line with the government's plan to turn the area into one of Malaysia's major food production centres.

Abdul Aziz Derashid, Kuala Balah assemblyman and Kelantan branch chairman of Farmers Organisation Authority, said the production target is 300,000 chickens by 2010.

Abdul Aziz said 15 livestock producers are now providing 200,000 chickens each breeding period and 12,000 eggs daily, and daily egg production target by the end of 2010 is 20,000 eggs.

The livestock producers also rear freshwater fish, cattle and goats, and farming, though they are all on a small scale, said Abdul Aziz.
