Mexico's pork producers demand for sector protection
Pork producers from Mexican states of Michoacan, Queretaro and Jalisco, have called for the federal government to protect its pork sector and closing borders to pork imports.
Vicente Garcia, representative of the pork producers, said Mexico's pork sector is going through a great economic loss due to fallen sales of about 30 percent and an increase of 75 percent in agricultural inputs.
Vicente Garcia, representative of the pork producers, said that the pork sector is registering a significant economic loss due to fallen sales of about 30 percent and a 75-per cent increase in agricultural inputs.
Garcia said the pork sector is facing a crisis as a result and that the government could impose safeguards to imports of pig and pork products to protect the sector.
However, Mexico's Ministry for the Economy said trade barriers could not be applied, as there is no evidence of damage to domestic production.
