Cargill opens first aqua feed mill in India
Cargill has opened its first feed mill dedicated to fish species in India, it was announced.
The mill, in the city of Vijayawada and acquired from Mulpuri Foods & Feeds, marks an important step in Cargill's work to develop its aqua feed business in India and across Asia.
The plant, which opened last Jan. 24, is strategically located at the Andhra Pradesh region—considered the capital of farm-raised aquaculture in India—and produces fish-feed products for tilapia and other warm-water species.
Cargill currently works with toll millers in the region, selling about 30,000 tonnes of fish feed a year. The new plant, with a capacity of 90,000 tonnes per year, enables Cargill to triple its fish feed capacity in India to better serve customers in the region.
"This is a vibrant market and we're excited to better serve farmers across Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Bengal", said Chad Gauger, managing director of Cargill aqua nutrition in South Asia. "The new facility positions us to better meet their demand, as the country will soon become the most populous in the world."
Cargill invested more than US$10 million in building the plant, which also brings around 200 new jobs to the region.
"India presents great opportunities for Cargill and plays an important part in our aqua nutrition growth strategy in Asia", said Einar Wathne, president of Cargill Aqua Nutrition.
The new feed plant marks the introduction of Cargill's EWOS brand of aqua nutrition fish feed products to India.

Brazil's Biorigin is sponsor at Aquafarm exhibition in Italy
Brazilian company Biorigin is the sponsor and one of the exhibitors in the second edition of Aquafarm, an international conference and exhibition focused on technologies, products and best practices for sustainable fish production, which is being held for two days at the Pordenone Exhibition Center, Italy, until Feb. 16.
Biorigin's booth, #5.25, exhibits natural solutions products for fish health, such as MacroGard, a beta 1,3/1,6 glucan product that "balances natural defenses, providing a more efficient protection against viral, bacterial and parasitic challenges and resulting in higher resistance and better performance".
Another product, ActiveMOS, which contains mannan oligosaccharides, "contributes to the maintenance of the intestinal integrity of fish, particularly during growing stages and challenging situations, preventing the penetration of pathogens and favouring nutrient absorption". This is one of the highlights of Biorigin's stand at the fair.
On Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m., Baldassare Fronte of the University of Pisa, and Simona Rimoldi and Genciana Terova of the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria will present the results of experiments with HiCell, an autolysed yeast, tested as an alternative nutritional source to fishmeal, and derivatives, and its effects on performance and intestinal morphology of fish.
Biorigin was established in 2003 to develop innovative solutions in 100% natural ingredients, based on biotechnological processes, for animal health and welfare.

Nordic Aquafarms to build land-based Atlantic salmon farm in US
Nordic Aquafarms (NAF) plans to develop one of the largest land-based salmon farms internationally in Maine, USA.
The Norway-based company has signed agreements to acquire 40 acres of land in the outskirts of the town of Belfast, a Maine coastal town with around 7,000 residents. The area has abundant access to sea- and freshwater resources that provide a good match with land-based aquaculture requirements.
"Finding an ideal site in Maine has been a six-month project", said Nordic Aquafarms CEO Erik Heim.
He said Maine had been chosen for its pristine location, cold-water conditions, its seafood profile and its proximity to major consumer markets in northeastern USA. Nordic Aquafarms will be developing production with a low-impact discharge of water free of chemicals and medications, renewable energy solutions and recycling of all waste resources. "We look forward to becoming a responsible and contributing member of the Maine seafood industry", said Heim.
Nordic Aquafarms intends to build a land-based salmon farm with 33,000-tonne (66-million-pound) annual production capacity, which is equivalent to about 8% of US consumption of salmon. The US$450-500-million facility will be an end-to-end operation, including hatcheries and fish processing.
It will house the largest aquaculture tanks in the world and new disruptive solutions, currently being designed by an experienced team in Norway. Construction is slated to start in 2019.
Lars-Henrik Røren, chairman of Nordic Aquafarms, said that Nordic Aquafarms "will do its outmost to complete a final investment decision to bring more than 30,000 tonnes per year fresh, locally farmed Atlantic salmon to the US consumers".

Mr Truong Minh Duc – Vice Director, Tan Sao A Co., Ltd. also shared his knowledge about "Vietnam Shrimp Farming Practices: Facts and Figures"; and Dr Kyaw Tun Myat, chairman, Myanmar Shrimp Association, shared interesting insights on "Myanmar Shrimp Farming Practices: Facts and Figures".
