Vietnam's tra and basa catfish to be halved in Q2
The farmers' lack of capital for production may reduce Vietnam's output of tra and basa catfish by 50 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to aquaculture experts.
Vietnam currently has 100 seafood plants that can process 1.5 million tonnes of seafood yearly. However, only one third of them will be used this year.
Tra and basa catfish export revenues this year is likely to drop to US$1 billion, much lower than the previous year's figure of US$1.48 billion.
The Aquaculture Breeding Department is to organise a conference in Can Tho this week to seek measures in preventing problems in production and consumption of shrimp, and tra and basa catfish in the Mekong Delta region in 2009.
