Turkey confirms H5N1 virus in latest bird flu case

Turkey's Agriculture Ministry confirmed Friday (Feb 9) that the H5N1 bird flu virus caused the deaths of 170 domestic fowl in a village in south-eastern Turkey.

The latest outbreak of the virus was detected on Feb 5, in the village of Bogazkoy in Batman province, where authorities said they have quarantined three villages in the province and culled about 1,650 birds since then. Final results from a laboratory in Ankara confirmed the deaths were linked to the H5N1 strain of the virus, the ministry said in a statement Friday.
