Can Chinese pig industry's profitability recover with expedited capacity reduction in breeding sows?

Data for December 2025 from listed hog farming companies in China indicate that, over the past year, the selling prices and revenues of most pig producers declined year-over-year, with some experiencing drops of up to 30%.
In 2025, domestic live hog prices fluctuated downward throughout the year and briefly fell below ¥11 (US$1.53) per kilogramme at year-end, reaching a multi-year low. Data show that the national average price of lean-type live hogs last year was ¥13.74/kg (US$1.91), representing a year-on-year decline of 17.97%.
With persistently depressed pig prices, industry players were in a situation of rising revenues without rising profits. Data from listed hog farming companies further reflect the reality of increased volumes without corresponding price gains across the sector.
