Philippines' decision on implementing maximum suggested retail price on pork may be revealed by end February

The Philippines' decision on whether to set the maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for pork may be known by the end of February, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on February 10.

At a press briefing, DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA needs another two-week timeline to identify the reason behind the spiking prices of retail pork.

"If we have identified (that there's) profiteering, then definitely, we will be doing an MSRP also for pork," he said.

Tiu Laurel said the farmgate prices of pork remain at ₱240 (US$4.13) to ₱250 (US$4.30) per kilogramme, making some of the retail prices "unreasonable."

"Why is there a ₱380 (US$6.53) to ₱420-level (US$7.22) in markets? So, I'm looking into the ₱100 (US$1.72) gap that I'm seeing," he said. "We're currently studying that and digging deep on the whole value chain of pork. Anything above ₱400 (US$6.88) is unreasonable."

He, however, refrained from giving a possible MSRP range, citing the need to determine a reasonable profit margin across the value chain.

As of February 6, the prices of pork kasim (ham) in Metro Manila range from ₱345 (US$5.93) to ₱420 (US$7.22) per kilogramme, while pork liempo (belly) ranges from ₱380 (US$6.53) to ₱480 (US$8.26) per kilogramme, according to the DA Bantay Presyo.
