Ghana announces development plan for its poultry industry
The Ghanaian government has announced an industry development plan backed by a GHS 80 million (~US$12.4 million; GHS 1 = US$0.16) three-year loan at an interest rate of less than 3% for all poultry producers in the sector, European Food Agency News reported.
The plan comes as Ghana's poultry industry has been affected by high livestock feed costs and an avian influenza outbreak. The domestic poultry sector only accounts for 2% of the country's needs.
A US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report stated Ghana's poultry meat production will increase to 60,000 tonnes in 2022 from 50,000 tonnes last year because of declining corn prices.
Poultry imports in Ghana are projected to hit 400,000 tonnes, a stark increase compared to the 295,000 tonnes imported in 2020. Ghana imports poultry from the US, UK, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, Canada, and Brazil.
