Volta Greentech plants to build seaweed plant to reduce cattle emissions
Sweden-based Volta Greentech is planning to build a plant that produces seaweed supplements which can reduce cattle greenhouse gas emissions, Bloomberg reported.
The company has recently concluded a successful pilot programme at a Swedish beef farm, which slashed methane emissions from cattle above 80%.
The new plant, called Volta Factory 2, will produce 50 tonnes of seaweed supplements annually to feed 3000 to 5000 livestock. Volta Greentech plans to raise additional funds for the plant, as well as research and development.
Volta Greentech's seaweed supplement is based on the red seaweed Asparagopsis Taxiformis. It contains large amounts of bioactive compounds, which can inhibit one of the enzymes required by methane-producing bacteria in the rumen to prevent it from forming.
