Close to 702,000 poultry killed due to bird flu in Ghana

According to Ghana's Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, 701,955 birds have been killed due to bird flu in the country, Ghana News Agency reported.

555,227 birds were culled as part of containment measures, with 143,406 died because of highly pathogenic avian influenza infections.

Dr Helena Acquah, the Regional Veterinary Officer of Ghana's Central Region, said the high number of deaths was due to poor biosecurity measures.

She urged farmers to limit visitors at their farms, introduce sound rodent and pest control programmes, avoid contact with non-commercial poultry or wild birds, and practice daily inspection of flocks.

She also said farmers must avoid poultry and poultry products movement within and from affected districts to other parts of Ghana.
