Decline in number of pre-slaughter pigs held up in German pens

The number of pigs which are heading for slaughter but are held up in pens in Germany have dropped last month.

At the start of 2020, that figure exceeded one million animals. While this excess decreased slightly during the first two weeks of January (-30,000 and -60,000 pigs, respectively), the number was reduced to about 880,000 animals (-90,000 pigs) in the third week. The main reason for this acceleration is German pig producers' ability to adapt.

At the same time, the supply of growing pigs is currently 7-8% lower than at the beginning of this year due both to the weekly reduction of piglet imports from the Netherlands and Denmark since September and the sharp decrease in the supply of German piglets.

It is also becoming increasingly clear that supply will decline further as the year progresses.
