IBGE: Brazil 2006/07 corn crop put at 47.7 million tonnes
Brazil should harvest 47.7 million tonnes of corn in the 2006/07 season, including the 2007 winter corn crop, the Brazilian Census Bureau, IBGE, said Wednesday (Feb 7).
Brazil plants corn twice annually. A main crop is expected to produce 35.5 million tonnes, or 13 percent greater than the 2005/06 crop, according to IBGE. Meanwhile, a winter corn crop is expected to produce 12.2 million tonnes, or 11 percent greater than the 2005/06 winter corn season.
Corn is Brazil's no. 2 crop behind soybeans in both acreage and production. Brazil will likely export roughly 5 million tonnes of corn in 2007, according to farm consulting group, Agroconsult.
