Ukraine approves order to keep antimicrobial veterinary drugs under control
Ukraine has approved an order concerning the use of antimicrobial veterinary drugs in veterinary medicine and a reporting procedure for veterinary medicine specialists, who use veterinary antimicrobials to treat animals, to report the amounts they use.
The order, Order No. 1177 by the country's Ministry of Economy, was approved and registered with the Ministry of Justice last month.
"Antimicrobial veterinary medicinal products and antibiotics remain the main drugs in the fight against bacterial infections in veterinary medicine," said Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
"The uncontrolled, excessive use of such a drug in animal husbandry makes the problem of antimicrobial resistance a serious threat to human health. To ensure control over the use of antibiotics, the Ministry of Economy has developed an appropriate order with which market operators must comply.
"In order to prepare for the new regulation, a transitional period has been set until March 21, 2023, when the order will come into effect."
