China's Xinjiang to sell more cotton in 2011-12

Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is expected to sell 2.8 million tonnes of cotton out of the region in the 2011-12 crop year, up 500,000 tonnes on-year, according to the local economic and information department.

By January 29, Xinjiang had delivered 930,000 tonnes of cotton to other parts of China, down 70,000 tonnes from the same period of last year.

The local authority also predicted that China would purchase 1.8 million tonnes of cotton in Xinjiang for state reserves in this crop year. Up to now, the state stockpiler has already bought 1.54 million tonnes of Xinjiang cotton.

Xinjiang is the biggest cotton production base in China. Its cotton output reached 2.9 million tonnes last year, accounting for 44% of the national total.
