European Commission satisified with draft law for labelling of animal husbandry in Germany

The European Commission has examined a draft law for the mandatory labeling of animal husbandry in Germany and expressed no objections.

Germany's Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) notified the commission of the draft law in accordance with the so-called Transparency Directive.

The country's aim is to give consumers a credible choice for higher animal welfare. The first measure envisaged will be to label unpackaged pork. The bill is currently being debated in the country's Federal Parliament.

If there are significant changes in the parliamentary procedure, a new notification could become mandatory.
