US poultry producers told to monitor flocks after bird flu was detected in the country
US poultry producers have been told to monitor their flocks closely after three cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected in North and South Carolina, WLFI reported.
Geoffrey Lossie, a clinical assistant professor at Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine, has called on producers, especially backyard flock farmers, to prohibit their flocks from intermingling with wild birds.
Lossie said it is important to maintain high biosecurity measures, which includes keeping coops clean, not sharing equipment with other producers, and thoroughly washing hands.
Lossie said farmers should contact their local board of animal health if they suspect bird flu or discover unexplained mortality among their flock.
