Irish milk intake up 9.2% in 2017

Irish domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers in 2017 was estimated at 7.268 billion litres, up 9.2% compared with the previous year's almost 6.654 billion litres, data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed.

For December alone, milk intake totaled 202.7 million litres, up 13.7% above the corresponding 2016 figure.

Milk intake refers to whole milk bought by creameries and pasteurisers from domestic producers through collection depots and separating stations. It includes whole milk obtained from herds owned by the creameries and pasteurisers. The fat content of the whole milk is also collected.

The CSO said total milk sold for human consumption for December increased 0.5 % to 44.3 million litres compared with December 2016 consumption.

Butter production in December was up 13.8 % to 9,490 tonnes.  Rick Alberto
