Charoen Pokphand Foods to roll out blockchain tech for its food products

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Ltd, a leading Thai food producer, will expand its use of blockchain technology for food traceability to its shrimp and cooked meat businesses, following successful trials from using the technology in its fresh pork and chicken products, Packaging Europe reported.

The company has a long-term goal of implementing blockchain-based traceability for all its products.

Blockchain technology allows the company to trace a product's entire value chain, including the raw material source, manufacturing facility, and manufacturing processes. In 2015, Charoen Pokphand Foods implemented the CPF Digital Traceability system in its value chain in Thailand.

The company collaborated with AXONS, a major Thai agri-tech firm, to accelerate its traceability system with blockchain traceability technology, which is widely used in a variety of industries such as banking, sourcing, procurement, and supply chains.

Blockchain traceability has been implemented throughout the company's entire supply chain, beginning with the procurement of raw ingredients for feed manufacturing and extending to farming, processing, and shipping.

Oraparn Mungmisri, assistant VP for the Global Standard System Centre at Charoen Pokphand Foods, said the company's use of blockchain technology offers consumers quick access to important product information. By scanning a QR code on the packaging, consumers can access information such as the origin of the product, certifications for quality and food safety standards, and details about sustainable production practices, including greenhouse gas emissions.
