China's Hunan province reports H5N1 bird flu outbreak


 

The country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain was discovered at a Shaoyang city farm, Hunan, reported Reuters.

 

The farm has 7,850 chickens in total, with 4,500 of the birds dead due to the virus.

 

The authorities have culled 17,828 poultry in the area following the discovery of H5N1 bird flu.

 

In Europe, a H5N8 bird flu virus has been spreading across the continent, carried by migratory wild birds. Outbreaks have been reported in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany and Ukraine.
