Tunisia developing aquaculture sector aggressively

As part of an effort to promote aquaculture and fish breeding activities, Tunisia had started 14 fish farming projects, with another 20 projects under study.

Out of the 14 projects, seven are dedicated to fish farming, five projects for freshwater fish and two others for shellfish farming.

For this, a workshop was held on the assessment of the monitoring of a Tunisian-Italian project in northwestern Tunisia. The TND2.62 million (US$1.9 million) project aims to boost aquaculture in Tunisia's rural areas.

About 4,000 fry will be released annually in river dams in neighbouring villages.

Northwestern Tunisia was chosen for the project because of its rich water resources, covering 60% of the country's reserves.
