Ningxia Xiaoming: The layer poultry giant of China's Helan Mountain region

Ningxia Xiaoming Agriculture and Animal Husbandry was the first company in China's layer industry to be publicly listed.

The vertical integrator owns a network that encompasses various, relevant sectors, ranging from hatching to sales in the layer chick industry.

Ningxia Xiaoming's main varieties of layer breeders include Hyline Brown, Hyline White, Hyline Pink, Lohmann Brown and Lohmann Pink, all of which are imported species.

The company's founder and chairman, Wei Xiaoming, started Ningxia Xiaoming with 3,000 breeder chickens in 1992  — a period that saw high-yielding poultry breeds from overseas enter China. Wei saw the opportunity and obtained funds to raise breeder layers on a rented farm belonging to the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ningxia Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

In 2000, Ningxia Xiaoming operated as an enterprise and built a modernised breeder farm in Huangyangtan at the foothill of the Helan Mountain of Gobi. Wei believes that the geographical conditions there favour laying hen breeding.

Following years of development, Ningxia Xiaoming managed to build three layer breeding bases in Minning, Qingtongxia and Alasa in the eastern and western foothills of Helan Mountain. It has seven breeding divisions, four grandparent stock breeding farms, 22 parent stock breeding farms, five hatcheries in Ningxia Minning, Xinjiang Wujiaqu, Henan Lankao, Jilin Changchun and Shaanxi Sanyuan, one commercial layer farm and a 200,000-tonne layer feed plant. The company's sales network covers almost 30 provinces in China and exports to Mongolia.

From 2017 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of Ningxia Xiaoming's layer chick sales reached 20.97%. Last year, the company established a new parent-stock layer breeder breeding division. It manages the Qingtongxia Fourth Division and the First Division in Alasa — each of these operating two standard parent-stock breeding farms with a combined annual inventory of 250,000 sets of layer breeders.

In total, these breeding farms can produce 35-40 million layer chicks each year.

Ningxia Xiaoming aims to maintain an average annual growth of 20% or more in the coming years.
