Association urges Malaysian government to finalise subsidies for poultry farmers
The Bumiputera Retailers Association (BRO) has urged the Malaysian government to ensure equitable subsidies and intervention measures for local poultry farmers are finalised so that they are able to remain competitive, The Sun Daily Malaysia reported.
BRO president Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin said this after the maximum retail price for standard chicken dropped MYR 0.20 (~US$0.048; MYR 1 = US$0.24) to MYR 8.90 (~US$2.13).
He said small-scale chicken farmers will be affected when chicken prices go down, as feed is expensive, it is difficult to source for workers, and logistics costs have gone up.
He also said in a statement that the association welcomes the Special Meeting of the National Action Council on Cost of Living's (NACCOL) decision to rectify food supply and production issues about chicken and chicken eggs. NACCOL will allow chicken import permits for all approved permit holders, as well as the issuing of approved permits to hypermarket operators.
