Successful cloning of endangered Chinese cattle marks breakthrough in conservation efforts

Scientists in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have successfully cloned the endangered Zhangmu and Apeijiaza cattle breeds found in Xizang Autonomous Region, a breakthrough in rescuing and protecting critically endangered cattle breeds, Chongqing reported.
The project, initiated in July 2022, aims to prevent the loss of genetic resources for these endangered species on the Xizang Plateau.
Led by Professor Wang Yachun from China Agricultural University, the research team collaborated with the Chongqing Academy of Animal Science and Chongqing Jinxia Animal Husbandry Liability Co, Ltd, using live protection, somatic cell cryopreservation, and cloning restoration techniques.
Wang Jing, an assistant researcher at the Institute of Animal Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, emphasised the careful selection of the project site in Yunyang County, Chongqing. This decision was based on the county's status as a traditional hub for cattle and sheep farming, coupled with its favourable climate conditions for the survival of cloned cattle.
As of now, the Chongqing Beef Cattle Breeding Farm has successfully cloned four male calves of each breed, achieving a significant milestone in conserving these endangered Xizang cattle species.
The next phase of the plan involves returning two cloned cattle of each breed to their original habitat in Xizang from July to August 2024 to address the urgent need for breeding bulls. Simultaneously, the Chongqing Beef Cattle Breeding Farm will continue cultivating the remaining cloned cattle, carrying out training, semen collection, and other activities to enhance breeding efficiency.
Liu Yonghong, deputy general manager of the Chongqing Beef Cattle Breeding Farm, highlighted the project's success, with a pregnancy rate of around 60% and a successful production rate of about 20%. These rates are considered top-level standards in the field of cloning technology, showcasing the monumental achievement in rescuing and protecting endangered Xizang cattle species.
