Cargill introduces NIR technology for real-time assessment of layer hen body composition

Cargill has rolled out new Near-InfraRed (NIR) technology, named REVEAL Layers, designed for non-invasive assessments of layer hen body composition, Meat + Poultry reported.

This innovative technology offers instant access to crucial data, empowering producers and nutritionists to make real-time decisions that positively impact long-term flock production and performance.

Lieske van Eck, senior scientist at Cargill, said that REVEAL Layers is part of Cargill's holistic approach to monitor body fat and egg production, supporting the producer and nutritionist to make educated decisions regarding the diet.

The technology addresses the challenge of feeding a growing global population, providing valuable insights for more sustainable and efficient poultry production.

The belief that overdeveloped fat pads in laying hens can lead to issues in long-term egg production and optimal liver function underscores the significance of Cargill's REVEAL Layers. Leveraging NIR light technology, the system accurately measures birds' fat pads. The collected data is then uploaded and analysed, offering actionable insights for producers and nutritionists.

Cargill anticipates several benefits from this technology, including cost reduction, enhanced profitability, and the maximization of egg production. The company is set to unveil REVEAL Layers at the 2024 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE).
