Chile approves odor environmental standard for pig farms

Chile's Council of Ministers for Sustainability has approved the Pollutant Emission Standard for Pig Farms, the first environmental odor standard in the country.

As a result of the nationwide application of the standard, it is expected to prevent and control the emission of odors from pig farms through the establishment of technological improvements and thus reduce odor emissions from the source. It will cover swine farms with more than 750 animals.

Under the standard, pig farms that still have untreated slurry lagoons must implement control technologies to reduce odor emissions. Additionally, the regulation adds reporting requirements for operational practices that will help to reduce odor events and improve communication between authorities, regulated establishments and the community.

The regulation will come into force once it is published in the Official Gazette, and both control and supervision will be the responsibility of the Superintendency of the Environment, which will ensure compliance with the standards established in the regulation and will coordinate a reporting system that will allow companies to self-monitor and provide updated information.
