South Africa confirms African swine fever at Southern Cape

 

 

African swine fever (ASF) has been detected in the Southern Cape, South Africa, with swine farmers in the area served quarantine notices to stop the spread of the disease, Independent Online South Africa reported.

 

The swine farmers are prohibited from removing swine or swine products from the area.

 

Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Agriculture Member of the Executive Council, called on swine farmers to practice good biosecurity measures to safeguard livestock health and security.

 

He said state veterinary services will provide essential advisory services to prevent the spread of the ASF.

 

Dr Gininda Msiza, Department Head of Veterinary Services, said farmers should dispose of swine carcasses safely, with swine confined to prevent roaming. Msiza also said Hands, shoes, clothing, and equipment must be sanitised before and after contact with swine.
