Vietnam catfish prices climb to two-year high

The price of tra catfish rose to VND16,200-16,500 (US$0.87-0.89) a kilogramme in Mekong Delta last week, the highest levels since 2008, ensuring farmers make a large profit.

However, most farmers are not selling, preferring to wait for prices to rise even further.

Nguyen Van Dao, director of Go Dang Seafood Co., a leading seafood processor in Tien Giang province, said many plants are facing a shortage of raw fish as a result.

Supply is, however, expected to rise from April. Duong Ngoc Minh, head of Management Board for Catfish Export to Russia, said the demand for the catfish in Russia, Poland, Germany, Spain, and Brazil has risen by 30% year on year.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is estimated to have exported US$270 million worth of seafood in the first month of this year, up 27.9% from December of 2009, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said.
