Ancera unveils microbial detection tools to enhance poultry industry safety

United States-based supply chain intelligence developer Ancera has introduced two cutting-edge microbial detection tools designed to identify and enumerate Clostridium perfringens and total viable bacteria (TVB) in poultry, Quality Assurance & Food Safety reported.
These tools address crucial challenges within both live operations and processing, aiming to bolster productivity, food safety, and intervention efficacy in the poultry industry.
Arjun Ganesan, CEO of Ancera, emphasised the significance of their platform, PIPER, which uniquely combines molecular and classical microbiology capabilities, providing operational relevance with a rapid time-to-result.
The new Clostridium and TVB assays, integrated into the PIPER platform, offer innovative solutions for poultry companies, enabling them to take proactive measures for productivity, animal welfare, and market share gains.
The Clostridium assay specifically targets Clostridium perfringens, the causative agent of necrotic enteritis in poultry, offering a valuable tool to manage and track the risk of this disease. Integrators can now determine and monitor Clostridium load, gaining visibility into its impact on production metrics and overall animal health. The technology also aids in assessing the effectiveness of interventions, particularly in animal welfare programs.
Additionally, Ancera has introduced the Total Viable Bacteria (TVB) assay, a true non-enrichment microbial quantitation tool focused on same-shift process improvement and quality control in poultry processing plants. This assay provides quantifiable microbial information, allowing integrators to evaluate the effectiveness of their processes in reducing microbial load.
The TVB assay, delivering results within a single working shift, represents a substantial improvement compared to traditional 48–72-hour turnaround times. This real-time trend analysis and decision-making capability enhance compliance and sanitation, reducing the risk of recalls.
The new assays will be available in 2024 to a limited set of trial customers, aiming to gather user feedback and accelerate the development of a fully commercialized software product.
To spearhead the rollout of these innovative diagnostic tools and Ancera's Command Centre platform, the company has appointed Troy Hatlevig as vice president of Product. Hatlevig, previously the vice president of Supply Chain Product for Wayfair, brings extensive expertise to Ancera as they strive to meet the evolving needs of the poultry industry, focusing on enhancing food productivity and consumer safety.
