Iraq constructing more grain storage for bumper wheat crop

Haider Nouri, director general of Iraq's state-run grain board, said they have approved a plan to construct a 100,000 tonne grain silo in Wasit province, as the country prepares to harvest a bumper wheat crop, Bloomberg reported.

The new storage facility will supplement the province's two small existing silos.

The grain board intends to increase Iraq's overall storage capacity, which is estimated to be 3 million to 3.5 million tonnes currently.

According to the Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture, the country is expected to produce 5 million to 6 million tonnes of wheat this year, or enough to achieve self-sufficiency, due to abundant and timely rains.
