Malaysian agriculture official assures no shortage of pork as Chinese New Year nears

There will be no shortage of pork in Malaysia for the upcoming Chinese New Year festive season, said the country's Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin.

He said that 60% of the pork supplied in Peninsular Malaysia currently comes from farms in Perak and that pork supply from Selangor had been near non-existent since last year. This comes after Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah decreed that there should be no more pig farming operations in Tanjong Sepat on January 12.

The proposed relocation of the affected pig farms to Bukit Tagar has also been halted, according to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari on January 26.

"For the farms in Tanjung Sepat, they had an outbreak of African swine fever last year so it means that since last year, their production has already dropped significantly," he said in a press conference at Parliament on January 27.

"This drop in pork production would be supplemented by the imported frozen pork and also those supplied from Perak or from other states so I can assure we have sufficient supply."

Chan also said pork prices will not increase after he met major pig farmers in Perak.
