US domestic poultry production declined in December

US domestic poultry production experienced a notable drop in December, according to the latest data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Brownfield Ag News reported.
The figures reveal that 4.062 billion pounds of poultry were certified wholesome during the month, representing a 6% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The decline in poultry production includes a reduction in chicken output, amounting to 3.657 billion pounds or a 6% decrease, and a drop in turkey production to 393.012 million pounds, reflecting a 5% decrease. These declines have been attributed to a slower pace of slaughter and lighter live weights in the industry.
Despite the December decrease, the unofficial poultry production total for the entire year of 2023 in the US reached 52.565 billion pounds. This marks a 1% increase from the previous year, with a slight uptick observed in chicken production and a notable 4% rise in turkey production.
