Australian Producers Urge Government To Take Action Against Alleged EU Pork Dumping
Australian pig producers have called on their government to take action against alleged dumping by the European Union. This comes after the European Union introduced pork export subsidies earlier this week
Australian Pork Limited (APL) says the export subsidies may reduce prices paid to Australian producers.
"Pork imports are already at record levels, and these new subsidies will exacerbate the problem," said APL chairman Dr Paul Higgins.
"They're going to subsidise for middles to come to Australia by about 40 cents a kilo; what that means is that it becomes the new benchmark for the price of middles in Australia, which reduces our price on that basis as well; so we would expect prices to fall by that amount."
