Turkey's poultry to be exported to the EU

The evaluation of Turkey's application to export chicken and turkey meat to the European Union has reached its final stages and that exports could start as early as July.

According to Poultry Industrialists and Breeders Association (BESD-BİR) Chairman Kemal Akman, Turkey had completed its technological development in the poultry sector and had more modern production methods than most of the countries in Europe.

Akman explained Turkey had complied with the standards required for export to the EU and that they expect chicken and turkey meat exports to rise from their level of 10,000 tons in 2004 to 30,000 tons in 2005.

He also noted that total production of chicken and turkey meat in 2004 was 950,000 tons in Turkey and that consumption per capita was 13 kilograms.
