South Dakota State University to close dairy farm due to cost constraints

South Dakota State University (SDSU) has announced the impending closure of its dairy farm in June 2024, citing financial challenges in modifying the existing facility, The Brookings Register reported.
Despite receiving state legislature funding, the university determined that the costs associated with the required modifications were prohibitively high, compounded by unsuccessful fundraising efforts.
Located just over a mile north of the campus, the farm, housing approximately 150 dairy cattle, served as a hub for faculty research and a hands-on learning environment for students. Originally constructed in the 1960s and renovated in the 1990s, the facility has played a crucial role in supporting the dairy industry.
Joseph Cassaday, the dean of the College of Agriculture, released a statement addressing the closure. He explained that after exploring various fundraising options and adjusting plans, the university concluded that discontinuing operations at the SDSU Dairy Research and Training Facility was the most viable decision by the end of June 2024.
Initial estimates for building a new facility were pegged at US$50 million, and even with alternative modifications, the projected cost exceeded US$28 million. Despite a legislative appropriation of US$7.5 million, the financial gap proved insurmountable.
Cassaday reassured stakeholders that the university would maintain its commitment to delivering high-quality degree programmes in dairy production, dairy manufacturing, and food science. SDSU will collaborate with industry partners to provide students with opportunities in modern, large-scale dairy production facilities for experiential learning and internships. Notably, the decision will not impact operations at the Davis Dairy Plant or ongoing research at that facility.
In response to the announcement, the South Dakota Dairy Producers expressed concern about the farm's closure, acknowledging its historical significance in fostering dairy research, student opportunities, and supporting the local dairy industry. The organisation highlighted the changing landscape of the dairy industry in South Dakota, focusing on the importance of collaboration and expressing a willingness to engage with SDSU leadership to chart a path forward that strengthens the department and expands opportunities for students.
