Vietnam intensifies global partnerships to achieve US$1.5 billion livestock exports by 2025

In a strategic move, agricultural entities and state management authorities in Vietnam are fast-tracking negotiations with global partners to open up export avenues, aligning with the nation's goal of reaching US$1.5 billion in livestock product exports by 2025, Vietnam Net Global reported.
Vietnam's Department of Animal Health (DAH), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), is actively engaged in discussions with Mongolian authorities to finalise procedures for the export of poultry and eggs. This initiative follows the successful signing of veterinary health certificates between the two nations in November 2023, marking a significant achievement after over seven years of negotiations.
Nguyen Van Long, director of the DAH, highlighted the potential of the Mongolian market, especially in poultry and egg products, given the country's predominantly nomadic livestock farming practices. Negotiations are also underway to explore markets in Hong Kong, South Korea, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Middle Eastern countries.
The DAH has collaborated with international inspection teams, including a recent inspection of the processed chicken production chain by a South Korean team and a visit from British inspectors assessing Vietnam's management system and processed chicken production for export.
Major agricultural players, such as CP Vietnam, are contributing to the export push by expanding facilities. CP Vietnam's CPV Food Binh Phuoc factory complex, operational since 2020, saw its first shipment of processed chicken to Japan in October 2022. Plans are in place to further export to South Korea, the UK, and Europe in 2024.
Other companies, including Japfa Comfeed Vietnam and Vinamilk, are also gearing up to enhance their export capabilities.
Vietnam has steadily become a global player in meat production, ranking sixth globally for swine farming by the end of 2022. The country's livestock sector, constituting a significant portion of the agricultural GDP, experiences consistent annual growth of 4-6%.
To support and stimulate the sector's development, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang approved a project in December 2023 aimed at advancing the slaughterhouse industry, livestock processing, and product market by 2030. The project sets ambitious targets, envisioning the proportion of industrial concentrated facilities for cattle and poultry slaughter to reach 60% and 40%, respectively, by 2025 and 70% and 50%, respectively, by 2030. Additionally, the project aims to elevate livestock product processing facilities to international standards, targeting export values of US$1.5 billion by 2025 and up to US$4 billion by 2030.
