Enhancing Poultry Farming: From Genetics To Premium Broiler Meat
Industries of varying shapes and forms are subject to change as public demand and sentiments come into play - the poultry sector is no stranger to these shifts.
As with cage-free egg production, the expressed benefits are lower risk of disease, eggs with better nutritional profile and improved animal welfare. It's little surprise that consumers would defer preference to this system of poultry production, while satisfying societal obligations to sustainability and humane treatment of animals produced for food.
Meanwhile, bird flu outbreaks worldwide form the bigger backdrop of the current threat the global poultry industry faces. This is but one of the many challenges the industry has to deal with and weather through.
At the farm level, a well-thought-out strategy is to ready solutions to combat and control issues that may arise during poultry production. AB Vista makes the case of having "comprehensive solutions in the field of animal nutrition" (pages 8-9); in this issue of Livestock & Feed Business, it focuses on its Gut Health Service (which analyses "the animal's microbiome, delivering critical information that helps select feed formulation and feed additive strategies to achieve… desired outcomes") and laboratory services (that ensures AB Vista products "have been integrated appropriately into… feed for consistent performance and cost optimisation").
Meanwhile, at the dietary level, Lallemand Animal Nutrition proposes using a melon juice concentrate based on a specific melon variety, "naturally rich in superoxide dismutase", to "directly up-regulate (an animal's) antioxidant defense system, particularly primary antioxidants (pages 10-11).
By strengthening production at all levels of farming, the poultry industry can be better directed to the desired outcome of sustainability.
