Up to 40% drop in Thailand's 2022 swine production expected

Swine production in Thailand is expected to reach 12-13 million head in 2022, down 35-40% an the average annual production of around 19-20 million pigs prior to the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Reduced swine production has put upward pressure on the country's swine prices since 2019.

Farm-gate prices of hogs and retail prices of pork meat increased to record levels in January.

Farm-gate prices of hogs in January 2022 increased to ฿96/kilogramme (US$2.91), up 27% from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, retail prices of pork meat increased to ฿190-200 per kilogramme (US$5.76-6.06), up 23% from the same period last year. Average retail prices of pork meat in 2022 are expected to increase around 30% from 2021 due to limited supplies of swine during the ASF outbreak.
